虫卵可藏在近地表的土壤和残体附近，不要只翻叶。季节和水分影响发生，不能照搬别处的发生日历。若虫在泡沫中生活，在蔗根附近取食汁液。若虫蜕皮后成为成虫，这种虫没有蛹期。若虫伤根，成虫取食叶片，检查不能只看一个部位。叶片焦枯也有其他原因，需要活虫与危害证据。
Eggs occur near soil and crop residues, beyond ordinary leaf inspection. Season and moisture affect activity; use local monitoring dates. Nymphs shelter in foam and feed around cane roots. Nymphs moult into adults without a pupal stage. Nymphs damage roots and adults feed on leaves; inspect both sites. Leaf scorch has other causes; combine injury with live-insect evidence.

Use local thresholds, population trends and crop condition to guide action. Recheck live insects and fresh injury, rather than old scorched leaves.
